Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has begun to breathe spontaneously in a first sign of activity in his brain since his massive stroke, a hospital spokesman said.

"We have started to reduce the amount of anaesthesia. In the first stage, the Prime Minister has begun to breathe spontaneously although he is still connected to the ventilator," Shlomo Mor Yosef, the director of Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem, told reporters.

"This is the first sign of some sort of activity in his brain," he added.
