Sonia Ghandi cheers Indian contingent

Congress President Sonia Gandhi sprung to her feet and waved enthusiastically when the contingent of Indian sports persons marched past the National Stadium in Beijing during the gala opening of the Olympics on Friday.

Clad in a purple Banarasi saree with a golden border, Sonia stood up as soon as the 56-member Indian delegation led by shooter Rajyawardhan Singh Rathore entered the 'Bird's Nest' stadium at the Olympic Village in the Chinese capital.

Sonia, 61, who arrived in Beijing on Thursday on a three-day visit, is accompanied by her MP son Rahul, daughter Priyanka, son-in-law Robert Vadra and two grand-children.

She will also meet Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping during her stay.

A galaxy of international leaders, including 80 heads of state attended the opening ceremony.
