Ten Tamil Tiger rebels and two civilians were among 15 persons killed in separate clashes in Sri Lanka as the country marked the Buddhist festival of Wesak.
Troops shot dead 10 Tiger rebels in sporadic clashes in Mannar district while three more were killed in Weli Oya on Tuesday, Defence Ministry officials said on Wednesday.
In the northern town of Vavuniya, two Tamil civilians were gunned down Tuesday night, police said.
Sri Lankans are today celebrating Wesak, which marks the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of lord Buddha. The government has banned the slaughter of animals during Wesak.
