Khusro Pervez, the commissioner of Lahore, told reporters that city authorities had deployed additional police in the city to ensure peace before and after Taseer's funeral.

Thousands of police were guarding Taseer's residence and other key sites.

Thousands of angry PPP workers, who gathered at the Governor's House, shouted slogans against religious parties and the PML-N.

Among the slogans were Qatil Qatil, Nawaz Qatil, Shahbaz Qatil, Sanaullah Qatil? a reference to senior PML-N leaders Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif and Rana Sanaullah? and Taliban ka jo yaar hai, gaddar hai (A friend of the Taliban is a traitor).

An intelligence official who interrogated the suspect, Mumtaz Qadri, said the 26-year-old commando had been planning the assassination since learning four days ago that he would be deployed with the governor.
