Local media captured dramatic images of the engine car knocked on its side and pointing backwards, while a passenger car was sprawled in the other direction on a grassy bank.

The train was travelling to Chicago with 71 passengers and five crew members and consisted of two locomotives and six railcars, Amtrak said in a statement.

Service was suspected across central Michigan and alternative transportation was being arranged.
