NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police Special Cell on Tuesday arrested two people for firing indiscriminately in northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura market, killing a man, injuring his son and three others on June 21.
Sunil Basoya (35) and Sandeep Tyagi (26) allegedly tried to kill Kailash Gupta (45) as he had refused to withdraw a murder case against the duo. The two men were allegedly involved in a murder case and Kailash was a witness.
Gupta was driving a bike with his son Rajan Gupta (16) riding pillion when three or four men in a car waylaid them.
Rajan’s both legs had to be amputated.
Police said a special team was deployed, technical surveillance was mounted on all suspects and several hideouts were raided.
On July 6, the police got information about the duo visiting Dilshad Garden.
“Our team spotted three men in a car and signalled them to stop. The men saw the police and tried to escape. To evade arrest and distract the police team, the men opened fire. The team had to shoot in self defence. They finally managed to arrest two of them while one managed to escape,” said deputy commissioner of police (special cell) PS Kushwah.
During questioning, the duo confessed to running a gang in NCR. They said they were involved in a murder case in which Kailash Gupta was the complainant.
The duo was pressuring him to compromise and withdraw the case, but he refused. They planned to kill him.
“Kailash had also made a complaint at Harsh Vihar police station that Sunil along with his accomplices had earlier forcibly entered his home and threatened him and his family of dire consequences. A case in the matter was also registered,” a police source said.
In June 21 incident, a tea shop owner and a passerby were also injured in the firing. After the shooting, the assailant’s car also hit a passerby, breaking his leg.
