A suspected car thief virtually gift-wrapped himself for Ghaziabad police on Monday by accidentally activating a vehicle’s auto-lock system after breaking in.
It was 5.30 am when a neighbour informed Indirapuram resident Pradeep Tyagi that a man was trapped inside his Renault Duster. Tyagi found the intruder attempting to break open one of the vehicle’s windows in an attempt to escape.
He called a few neighbours and alerted the police. After a PCR van reached the spot, Tyagi unlocked the car and police nabbed the man.
“He entered the SUV by unlocking the rear door. Then he removed the gear lock with a cutter. In an attempt to start the car, he cut the wires of some electrical fittings because of which the central lock got jammed and the thief was trapped inside,” said Tyagi.
Police officials said the suspect was detained but as he seemed mentally unstable and Tyagi decided not to register a case, the man was set free.
“Since the attempt was unsuccessful and the man didn’t look like a professional car thief, I didn’t want to get into a legal tangle,” said Tyagi.
