The first official teaser trailer for Black Panther has dropped, and it tells us quite a lot about the Wakandan superhero and the strange new world around him.

Black Panther’s role in Captain America: Civil War might have been limited, but Chadwick Boseman managed to impress the audience with his portrayal of the T’Challa — Wakanda’s crown prince and resident superhero. The costume, too, was praised for being an interesting mix of new-age styling and the original comic book appeal. And, the hero is now back with his first solo outing in the Marvel cinematic universe.

The trailer of Boseman-starrer Black Panther hit the internet a few days ago, and has managed to create major hype among fans. The visuals and stellar cast have set social media on fire too, but not much is known about the plot yet (which is kinda good).

While the trailer brilliantly masks the story behind Wakanda’s hero, we give you all that we noticed in the trailer. Piece these clues together and you might just know what to expect from the movie that hits theatres on February 16, 2018.

OLD FACES

Two old faces — Ulysses Klaue( Andy Serkis) and Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) — are shown as part of an interrogation in the opening seconds of the trailer. Ulysses Klaue, a smuggler and black market arms dealer, first made an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Everett K. Ross first appeared in Captain America:Civil War. While what role Ross will play in the movie is not really known, Klaue has been a major Black Panther villain in the comics who goes by the name, Klaw.

THE SECRETS OF WAKANDA

During the interrogation where Klaue reveals that Wakanda isn’t really the third-world nation the world believes it to be, and soon, we get shots of the real Wakanda, a secret hidden from the world. The city is also called El Dorado—the mythical city of gold — by Klaue, and we get a good glimpse of the futuristic looking Wakanda throughout the trailer. Despite being very futuristic, Wakanda also seems to be high on the original African tribe culture with traditional gear and makeup for the other characters.

FLASHBACK?

A certain introductory sequence for the character shows Black Panther take down a Militia group in the jungle. But, if you look closely, these men have old communication devices, which could mean that this is indeed a flashback sequence from when King T’Chaka (T’Challa’s father) donned the costume (something that the comics often talk about, but the movies haven’t shown yet).

NEW SUIT

Hawk-eyed fans would also notice that the Black Panther suit has changed quite a bit from its debut in Captain America:Civil War. The accents are much sleeker and the suit looks much leaner and feline like. Another shot towards the end shows the superhero shoot a concussive blast from his hands, giving us enough hints that we also might see some new tech upgrades in the suit.

T’CHALLA’S JOURNEY

A major recurring theme in the trailer is that of T’challa’s new journey as king and protector of Wakanda. The voice over in the trailer also says that T’Challa is a good man with a good heart but it is hard for a good man to be king— something which could play up throughout T’Challa’s emotional journey into becoming the best leader for his community while overcoming challenges.

MEET THE VILLAINS

The trailer also introduces us to the two villains from the Black Panther lore —Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) and M’Baku aka Man Ape (Winston Duke). Erik Killmonger has been one of the toughest villains for the superhero and is shown to be working with Klaue, as he rescues him from interrogation room in the trailer. M’Baku and Killmonger are both exiles from Wakanda, and are rumoured to be the ones challenging T’Challa’s reign as king of Wakanda.

PANTHER’S LOVE INTEREST

Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia (Marvel)

We also get our first glimpse at Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia. Nakia is part of the Dora Milaje and will also serve as the leading lady in the film. A formidable fighter and ally to the Black Panther, she will also be Boseman’s love interest in the movie. While there aren’t many scenes in the trailer that show her combat prowess, one can expect some great action sequences by her in the movie.

ENTER THE DORA MILAJE

Who are the Dora Milaje? Well, you might remember one of them, Florence Kasumba’s Ayo, who told Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) “move or you will be moved” in a sequence in Civil War. The Dora Milaje are an all-female team of bodyguards dedicated to protecting Wakanda’s king — T’Challa in this case. We see a few shots of them squaring off against enemies and even Killmonger, and one can expect much more form them in the movie.

T’CHALLA’S FAMILY

T’Challas’s sister and the female Tony Stark of Wakanda, Suri (Letitia Wright) makes an appearance in the trailer much like other members of the Royal family. She is seen wielding some Panther tech and comic fans would know that she has also donned the suit for quite some time too. We also get a look at T’challa’s mother, Queen Ramonda (Angela Basset), W’Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya ) an advisor and confidant to T’Challa, and his mentor Zuri (Forest Whitaker).
