The votes are in. The golden envelopes are ready. The winners have been decided for the HT Oscars 2016.
We asked our readers to vote for their favourites in the four major categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director, and by the looks of it, you fans sure have a favourite. From the 1400 votes we’ve collected since February 20, here are the results.
It’s no secret that Leonardo DiCaprio and his crushing performance as a fur trapper out for revenge in The Revenant is the most buzzed about movie this awards season. And the votes match up. According to your votes, Leonardo DiCaprio is the outright winner for that long due Best Actor Oscar. He scooped up a whopping 88.54% of the votes, leaving the rest of the field out in the cold. Eddie Redmayne was a distant second with 4.72% of the votes for his transformative performance in The Danish Girl, followed by Michael Fassbender’s stellar turn as Steve Jobs with 3.37% of the votes.
Jennifer Lawrence’s star power came out in her support as she accumulated 42.9% of the votes, despite her movie Joy receiveing mixed reviews. Coming in at second place is Brie Larson and her absolutely stunning performance in Room with 28.38% of the votes. Cate Blanchett’s turn in Carol scored her 14.52% of the votes and a third place finish.

Moving on to Best Director. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is looking for his second Academy Award in a row after winning the golden statue last year for Birdman. And it looks like he will. He’s leading the pack by a wide margin with 56.69% of the votes. But it’s George Miller’s fantastic job helming Mad Max: Fury Road that’s getting you all excited. He comes in at second place (much like Max in the movie) with 23.59% of the votes. The underdog in this category is Tom McCarthy, whose measured approach in Spotlight got him 9.51% of the votes.
And now for the big one, the one we’ve all been waiting for: Best Picture. Once again, your passion for The Revenant is clear. The revenge epic has swept the HT Oscars with 49.02% of the votes. But you’ll never guess which movie was your next favourite. It’s Matt Damon’s crowd-pleasing survival film The Martian, which got 14.46% of the votes.

So there we have it. In a year where the Oscars are tangled up in controversy regarding their lack of diversity, you’ve picked your winners. The Revenant it is.
