A six-year-old girl was raped and killed in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district on Sunday, a day after her father reported her missing, police said.
Darshini G, from Telenganur taluk, had disappeared on Saturday evening after her father had sent her out to buy groceries, according to a Kolathur police official.
“Her father, Gurunathan, had sent her to a nearby shop which was hardly half a kilometre away from their house,” the official said. “When she didn’t return after half-an-hour, he went looking for her and started asking if anyone had seen her.”
Police found the girl’s mutilated body on Sunday morning. A 17-year-old man, Thirumurthy, who hails from nearby Pallakodi but was visiting his grandfather in Telenganur on Saturday, was arrested in connection the crime.
Thirumurty killed Dharshini after raping her and hid her body in a large pot, covering it with a lid, according to the police. “The postmortem… confirms she was raped,” another policeman said.
Initial television reports had suggested that Darshini was killed as part of a human sacrifice.
In 2014, a 10-year-old girl had been raped and killed in the same district, with police initially suspecting that she, too, had been a victim of human sacrifice.
