Unconfirmed reports said apart from the two militants killed, four to five more were holed up. Another soldier was said to have been injured. The gunfight was still on when reports last came in. Army officials said the situation had been contained.

The attack came days after India carried out surgical strikes on terrorist launchpads across the Line of Control in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the militant attack on an army camp in Uri.

The Rashtriya Rifles camp is located on the outskirts of Baramulla city, 54 km from Srinagar. The armed assailants tried to enter through a public park near the camp, but were stopped, agency reports said.

In a separate incident, Pakistan opened fire on Indian posts in Akhnoor sector. The firing violates the 2003 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan along the international boundary and the Line of Control (LoC).

The border skirmish comes when New Delhi and Islamabad are locked in a bitter diplomatic war of words following the Uri terror attack, in which heavily armed militants, believed to be of Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad killed 19 soldiers.

Relations between the two countries have been fraught with tension since the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes across the LoC in response to that attack.

Former CM Omar Abdullah tweeted, “Colleagues in Baramulla town are phoning with reports of massive gunfire in their vicinity. Prayers for all in the area.”
