Two students of Mata Gujri college climbed atop college water tank on Wednesday, over refusal of examination roll number by college authorities and threatened to commit suicide.

After nearly an hour of argument with college authorities and police, the two BA second year students (Sarabjit Singh and Indervir Singh) came down and agreed to resolve the matter through negotiation. However, as students and authorities exchanged blames, police chose to remove students from college premises.

Students alleged that authorities forced them to sign an affidavit that college would not be held responsible if students fail in internal examination and assessment.

“Then they started failing the students in internals,” said Sarabjit. “We deposited the fine for short attendance and followed the process of re-admission too, so now how can they refuse to give us a roll number.” said Indervir.

Countering students’ charges, college principal Jatinder Singh Sidhu said, “Internal assessment includes the marks for discipline and they were are not good at it. Besides that they failed to attend required number of lectures.”

“We still tried to cooperate with them and asked them to call their parents and one of them threatened college authorities,” the principal said. “We will resolve the matter and give the roll numbers after following a procedure,” he added.
