Brutality? The family of an eight-year-old boy, who died after a brief illness on Sunday, has alleged that he was thrashed by his class teacher at Government Primary School, Phullanwal, for stammering during a lesson. “Bindu was crying profusely when he came home from school, and said he will never go back to school again as the teacher used to thrash him.”

The boy was identified as Bindu Ram alias Guddu, a resident of Pasi Nagar on Pakhowal Road. He was from a family of labourers and went to school with his siblings, 12-year-old Sapna and 10-year-old Sajan.

Police said the family has lodged a complaint against the teacher at Dugri police station, but they will register a case only after an investigation. A postmortem was conducted at the civil hospital and the child’s body was handed over to the family. Doctors have sent the boy’s viscera to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala for a chemical examination.

‘Child was thrashes regularly’

Bindu’s uncle, Ajay Kumar, alleged that the class teacher, a woman, regularly thrashed the child as he had a speech impairment. The boy’s grandfather, Sri Ram, claimed that she beat him up again on Saturday. “Bindu was crying profusely when he came home from school. When we asked him why he was crying, he said he will never go back to school again as the teacher used to thrash him,” he added.

Sri Ram further said, “I pacified the child saying I will go to the school with him on Monday and will ask the teacher to not beat him up again,” adding that he noticed a swelling behind Bindu’s ear. On Saturday night, he fainted and was rushed to the civil hospital where he died on Sunday.

He further alleged that even his wife went to school to meet the teacher and requested her to not thrash him, but the teacher did not pay heed to her pleas.

Bindu’s sister, Sapna, a student of Class 3, said the class teacher thrashed Bindu for stammering. On Saturday, his ear was bleeding. When she asked him what had happened, Bindu told her that the teacher pulled his hair and slapped him. The teacher also used a stick on his hands.

DEO marks inquiry

District education officer (DEO), elementary, Jaspreet Kaur, has marked an inquiry into the incident and said the education department will act once a report was out. However, school in-charge Charanjit Kaur has refuted the allegations. She refused to reveal the identity of the teacher and added that no teacher was allowed to beat any child. She further said the boy was already suffering from a prolonged ailment and died of that. She did not know why the family was targeting the teacher.
