A police constable was suspended on Wednesday after he allegedly beat up a woman, police said in Sangrur.

The suspended constable, Gurinder Singh, was posted at Bhalwan village police station. The constable allegedly trespassed a house and assaulted Amandeep Kaur of Kunran village.

Amandeep’s husband, Hardeep Singh said Gurinder had illicit relations with a woman of their village, due to which, Gurinder used to visit their village many times every day. He said the villagers did not like the constable visiting their village so frequently.

Hardeep said the constable a week ago entered his house and abused and beat up his wife Amandeep. He said the same day they filed a complaint but no action was taken. Soon, the residents of the village started a protest on Sangrur – Barnala highway against the constable Gurinder Singh. Following this, the police officials, on Wednesday, suspended the constable. The station house officer, Sikander Singh Cheema, confirmed that the constable was suspended.

On statements of Amandeep, a case was registered under sections 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against the accused. Police said the probe was on.
