Exhibition now allows aficionados to buy artworks of their favourite graphic novel charactersart and culture Updated: Jul 24, 2011 15:41 IST
This August, there is a special treat on offer for comic book aficionados. Vimanika Comics is holding an exhibition-cum-sale of its book covers that have now been turned into artworks on canvas.
On throughout the month, the exhibition will also give comic book and art lovers a chance to buy artworks based on their favourite comic characters like Kalki and Dashavatar and take them home.
“This exhibition will display all our hit and successful covers. We came up with the idea after fans came to us and said that they would love to see and own some of our works,” says Karan Vir Arora, founder of Vimanika Comics, who then decided to print the works on canvas in a bid to capture the Indian culture, heritage and spiritual values that his comic book series represent.
On display will be popular comic covers like Agni, Vayu and Bhoomi. Though the emphasis is on covers, inside pages of some comic books will also be available as artworks.
Relying on a unique artistic amalgamation of historical stories and contemporary style and heavily influenced by Indian mythology, the works have a distinct Manga feel, deriving inspiration from European and American perspectives, but eventually keeping the Indian feel alive in them.
Arora says, “These will be available in different sizes, the smallest being 1 foot by 2, while the largest is around 3 feet by 5.”
Cost details as well as the number of pieces per artwork that will be available for sale will be decided at a later date.
On the opening day, there will also be a talk on the exhibition concept.
It will be followed by a discussion on the actual artworks and the mythology behind it. Next up, there are plans to hold a similar exhibition of sequential comic book pages of the current covers on display.
