A Katni-based actor, who played the role of a police inspector in popular TV serial Crime Patrol, was shot dead under mysterious circumstances in Sanjeevani Nagar locality in Jabalpur on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday.
While close relatives of 38-year-old Kamlesh Pandey claimed that he shot self in the chest, the Jabalpur police said the matter is still being investigated.
Pandey, a native of adjoining Katni district went to visit his sister-in-law in Jabalpur’s Sanjeevani Nagar locality at around 1.30am on Tuesday.
City SP (Gorakhpur-Jabalpur) Anju Patle said his relatives told police that Kamlesh was drunk and fired two gunshots with a country-made gun he possessed.
“His relatives claimed that one shot fired by him (Kamlesh Pandey) hit the roof of a room while the other injured him in his chest.” Patle said
A preliminary investigation suggests that Kamlesh was unhappy with the engagement of one his sister-in-law’s daughters without his prior consent, the CSP said.
“Initially, his relatives refused to open doors but when Kamlesh rang his wife in Katni district asking her to tell her sister to open the doors of the house, they relented,” the CSP said.
“Pandey allegedly was a short-tempered person. The police have seized a pistol and a liquor bottle from the spot,” she added.
The police are investigating whether the deceased received a bullet from the same pistol or some other weapon and if there was anyone else present at the site of the incident apart from his relatives.
