The by-elections to the Mungaoli and Kolaras assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh will be held on February 24, the Election Commission announced on Friday.

The counting of votes will take place on February 28.

“The poll notification would be issued on January 30. The nominations can be filed till February 6 while scrutiny of the same will be done on February 7. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is February 9,” a poll official informed.

The bypolls for the two seats assume importance given the fact that assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh are expected to take place in October-November this year. The by-election results are likely to reflect the mood of the state in the run up to the polls.

Senior Congress leader and MP from Guna Jyotiraditya Scindia is leading the campaign in both the constituencies for the party. Meanwhile, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has addressed a number of public meetings in the two constituencies.

The two assembly seats were represented by the Congress prior to them falling vacant.
