Taking the Vyapam scam to the streets, the Youth Congress activists in Bhopal marched towards the CM House demanding his resignation and in process clashed with the police on Thursday.

The police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed tear gas shells to stop the protestors who stuck to their guns and the agitation continued for over one hour. Several congress leaders including some policemen were injured. Later the youth congress workers courted arrests.

Police had a tough time controlling the agitated congress workers. The police lobbed around three tear gas shells. Due to heavy rains police could not aim it correct. The shells fell in the wrong lane and the opposite winds brought the gas towards the police. Police also alleged the congress workers resorted to stone pelting.

Hundreds of Youth Congress activists tried to gherao the CM house, demanding resignation of chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over Vyapam scam.

National Youth Congress president Amrinder Singh Barar along with leader of Opposition Satyadev Katare, congress MLAs Ajay Singh, Jitu Patwari, Madhu Bhagat, Tarun Bhanot and several others were present during the show.

Congress leaders started gathering at Roshanpura square from noon onwards. According to police estimate about 2-3000 Congress workers gathered for protest where senior congress leaders addressed the crowd. Some protestors started shouting slogans in favour of their leaders which irked the national president Barar.

He took the mike and asked the protestors to stop slogan shouting naming specific congress leaders. “Hum tamasha karne nahi ladne aye hai (We have come here to fight (for a cause) and not drama),” said visibly upset Barar. He said BJP does not believe in democracy; some BJP MLA show slippers to others while others push the leader of opposition Satyadev Katare.

Boosting the morale of Congress workers, Barar said that one who would throw stiff challenge to Shivraj would be rewarded and not those who are showing placards in favour of some leader.

He also challenged youth congress workers to face the torrential rains and urged the senior congress leaders not to leave the venue. He then came down from the stage to march ahead.

According to police about 50 Congress workers including MLAs Ajay Singh, Govind Singh, Jitu Patwari, Saurabh Singh, Sukhendra Singh, Lalit Bhanot, general secretary Mahendra Singh Chouhan, state youth congress president Kunal Chowdhary were arrested to be released later.

About 1200 police personnel were deployed to control the situation. All roads leading to Roshanpura square were closed and the traffic diverted to alternate routes from 11am. Traffic resumed to normal only after 3pm.

Police indulged in vandalizing

Police wereen vandalizing during the protest. Some policemen started breaking windows of the cars and SUVs with their lathis, parked near the venue. They broke the windshields and windows of several vehicles parked there. Positive part of the story is that a senior police official rebuked the police personnel engaged in vandalizing act. In the process to control the police he had to cane charge some of them.
