It seems the word of mouth publicity is working for Udta Punjab. The film has opened well at multiplexes despite an online leak. The film was leaked two days before its release. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the film’s opening day’s business.
#UdtaPunjab had a STRONG Fri... Best in North India [Delhi, Punjab]... Plexes across big cities VERY GOOD... Fri ₹ 10.05 cr. India biz.— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) June 18, 2016
If #UdtaPunjab maintains similar numbers or shows growth on Sat + Sun, it will help garner an impressive weekend total...— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) June 18, 2016
Udta Punjab has garnered a good response in North India owing to the controversy and hype surrounding its theme, but has failed to click with the audience in South and Eastern region.
“The opening of the film was not that great but the film picked up during the day. It’s a mixed response. The film is doing decent in the north belt especially in Delhi while in Rajasthan, Gujarat and in the Eastern belt the response is weak,” said film distributor, Rajesh Thadani.
The Anurag Kashyap and Ekta Kapoor produced film grabbed eyeballs even before its release, after it got embroiled in a controversy over the numerous cuts suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
