Actor Anupam Kher has been appointed as the new chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune and as soon as the news broke, wishes and congratulatory messages started pouring in for the senior actor on twitter.
Meanwhile, HT spoke to former FTII chairman, Gajendra Chauhan and he feels that Anupam Kher is the perfect choice for the said position. Chauhan shares that having known Kher for a long time, he is confident that the latter will do extremely well in his new role.
“Given the kind of person Anupam is, I think he will do really well . I am yet to congratulate him, but I want to personally meet and wish him. To head an institute like FTII, one doesn’t have to be just an actor or director, but a good administrator,” says Chauhan.
Visibly unhappy with some people wrongly reporting that Chauhan has been replaced by Kher, he also took to twitter and wrote, “I hv not been axed. I completed my tenure in Mar 2017. Some channels are doing wrong reporting (sic)”
In January 2016, FTII students — both present and former — had protested against Chauhan’s appointment and even boycotted classes for 139 days. But Chauhan says that they soon realised his good work and supported him. “This [protest] was before I started doing my work. I have addressed a lot of issues one after another, worked toward improving course and semester system, and got a new syllabus and semester system and also introduced elective courses. I also helped old students complete their diplomas. And soon things were under control as the student realised my good intention,” says Chauhan, adding that his work was acknowledged in the latest CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General of India) report that said the best work has been done under his chairmanship at FTII.
However, Chauhan regrets that he got very less time to work at FTII. “I was the chairman for a year, a month and few days in FTII, compared to most others, who had two years or more to work for the betterment of the institute. But now, I have moved on in life and am enjoying my current responsibility and films,” he says.
Chauhan is now the chairman of the Evaluation Committee of Doordarshan’s Arun Prabha. He is also finished shooting for two films and is currently shooting for another film.
