Hit B-Town pairs are back on the silver screen
As Sushant Singh Rajput and Parineeti Chopra sign their next together, we look at other hit Bollywood pairs who are set to make a comeback.
Back in the ’40s and ’50s, Raj Kapoor and Nargis starred together in 16 hit films, including Barsaat (1949), Awara (1951) and Shree 420 (1955). Other popular pairs such as Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman, Dharmendra and Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha, and, more recently, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, have also shared screen space on several occasions.

Comfort level
Casting hit pairs seems to be a success formula for film-makers even today. Perhaps that’s why many successful Bollywood pairings will be seen on the big screen again in the near future. So, if Sushant Singh Rajput will work with Parineeti Chopra in Takadum after Shuddh Desi Romance (2013), Aditya Roy Kapur has already finished working on OK Jaanu with Shraddha Kapoor (they did the 2013 hit Aashiqui 2 together). Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt will also be back together in Badrinath Ki Dulhania (BKD), after Student Of The Year (SOTY; 2012) and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014).
“It (casting a hit pair) helps for sure, as the actors can start from where they had left off in their last film together. Since the actors know each other well, they can start focusing on their characters right away. Their comfort level also makes things easier for the director, as they know how to play to each other’s strengths,” says Shashank Khaitan, director of BKD.
Trust factor
Ranveer Singh, who is believed to have bagged film-maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next, Padmavati, along with his rumoured girlfriend, Deepika Padukone, makes a similar point. “When I know I am going to do a scene with Deepika, I am not worried or concerned, as I know that I can trust her. She is a trusting, giving and supportive actor. If you are struggling with something, or having some difficulty, you know you can count on her for support,” says Ranveer, who has worked with Deepika in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013) and Bajirao Mastani (2015).

Sushant feels the cast of a film plays an important role in determining the project’s fate. “Our movie has a challenging script. Homi (Adajania; director) never compromises on anything. He has to be convinced about the actors who have been roped in. I feel only Parineeti’s acting skills can do justice to the character she plays in the movie,” says Sushant.
Friends indeed
In the coming months, Ranbir Kapoor will team up with Katrina Kaif in Jagga Jasoos and with Anushka Sharma in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. He worked with Anushka in Bombay Velvet (2015) and with Katrina in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) and Raajneeti (2010). Experts feel it’s not just about professional relationships. Personal equations also help when it comes to working on a film. “I really enjoy his (Aditya Roy Kapur) company. He’s a real person, and also a good friend. It’s great to be working with him again, since he is an amazing actor. He is one of my favourite people. Also, it’s exciting to do completely different characters from what we did in Aashiqui 2,” says Shraddha Kapoor.
Like Shraddha and Aditya, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, too, are excited about working together again, as they started their Bollywood journey together with Student Of The Year. “Everyone knows that Alia is a good actor. We have always shared a great relationship. We keep fighting and making up. She is special to me, and since we are coming together for the third time, we will make sure that it is amazing. We will live up to everyone’s expectations,” says Varun. Alia adds, “With Varun, I can talk, walk, eat and sleep movies, and not get bored. He always wants to push himself and do more, which makes me push myself more. Plus, working with him means I get to do a lot of comedy, since he has a funny bone in him (smiles).”

Experts insist that personal equations help a lot when it comes to working on a film, as it’s not just about professional relationships. “I really enjoy his (Aditya) company. He is a good friend.
