Your role in Dedh Ishqiya is of a bold and brazen girl. Do you share any similarities with her?

My character (Munia) is a mysterious, likable, modern girl. She is unpredictable. She will be at

mushayaras

one minute and meet shady men in alleys the next. She’s

badtameez

(ill-mannered) and direct. Munia is far more aggressive than I am. I am a happy-go-lucky person – a goof ball – unlike the intense Munia.

Do comparisons with Vidya Balan who did the original, bother you?

I knew there would be comparisons with Ishqiya (2010) Vidya had done a phenomenal job. More than pressure, I feel flattered that my name is taken along with Vidya’s. Sequels have a lot of pressure to deliver. especially for the makers. I treated it as a fresh film and didn’t worry about the shoes I had to fill.

Richa Chadda and you were touted to be rivals after working together in Gangs of Wasseypur (2012). Do you consider her competition?

I have never been in competition with anyone and neither do I intend to. I am not in the rat race. I am not insecure and I like doing my own thing. Everyone from Gangs is getting good work and the critical acclaim and films that we deserve.

Six films down, you seem to be sticking to parallel cinema. Do you plan to do more commercial movies?

I would love to do

masala

films, as I grew up watching them. I love the song and dance routine. As an actor I want to keep increasing my fan base. I am glad to have got an opportunity to do such a variety of films, but there are many more genres that I would like to explore.
