I want to direct a thriller, a gangster movie: Zoya Akhtar

Zoya Akhtar says she would like to explore the thriller genre after writing one (Talaash). She says she has no music talent but ,loves rock and jazz music. The director talks about recreating period stories and likes them for its sheer opulence.

Rumours about Zoya Akhtar directing a movie on street rappers have being doing the rounds for some time now. Reports also revealed that Ranveer Singh had been roped in to play the lead role in the project.

While Zoya has now confirmed the news of making such a film, she refuses to divulge any other information. “I am not allowed to give out any details until the producers make an official announcement,” she says.

While Zoya’s brother Farhan Akhtar’s concerts have been making waves, she says she has “no musical talent”. “I have an appreciation for it though. I listen to all kinds of music. I love jazz, rock and hip hop. From The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, to Led Zepplin — I love their music,” she says.

As for filmmaking, dramas are known to be her forte. But Zoya says she would like to explore a new genre now — thrillers. “I have written one (Talaash; 2012), but I also want to direct a thriller or a gangster film. These are the kinds of movies I watch a lot. I just need a good story,” she says.

Ask her if she wants to remake any of her favourite movies, and Zoya says, “If I feel I could do it better, then it is not my favourite film. There are so many movies that I wish I could adapt. But, I don’t think I can make them better.” If at all, she says she wants to recreate a period film. “I want to recreate that magic, especially when it comes to the costumes. These films are so grand,” she says.
