A few days ago, actor Irrfan, two of whose films (The Lunchbox and Qissa) were showcased at the recently concluded Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), took to the stage to entertain his audience in a different avatar.

When the screening of his upcoming release, The Lunchbox, got delayed due to a technical glitch, Irrfan decided to step up and amuse the 3,500-odd people waiting to watch his film with some impromptu humour.

“There was a slight issue with the film’s print, so the screening was taking some time to start. After a while, Irrfan and Ritesh Batra (director) sensed that the audience was beginning to get a bit impatient; that’s when they stepped on to the stage and took control of the situation,” reveals a source.

While Ritesh introduced the movie to the eclectic crowd, Irrfan kept them engaged with his antics. “He kept them in splits till the show started,” adds the source. Those present at the screening claim that a member of the audience even came up to Irrfan and told him, “You’re a really fun guy. I always thought you were dead serious.”

Confirming the incident, Irrfan says, “I believe in entertaining audiences in whatever capacity I can. At TIFF, something within (me) pushed me to do a comedic bit for them with Ritesh, and the response was very humbling. I’m glad people accept seeing me in various avatars.”
