The ongoing 40th Telluride Film Festival in Los Angeles is one of America’s top movie events. In the past, the likes of David Cronenberg, Ang Lee and Danny Boyle have showed their work here, and the festival is seen as an early Oscar showcase.

So it’s a big honour for Irrfan’s next, The Lunchbox, which has been screened there this year. The film is directed by Ritesh Batra, and is being presented by Karan Johar. A source close to the production house reveals, “(Telluride) selects only 24 films from across the globe. The festival is renowned for its program and the fact that most of the selected films make it to the Academy Awards nominations list. The makers (of The Lunchbox) are naturally thrilled to have such a good platform.” Coincidentally, Slumdog Millionaire (2008; also starring Irrfan) was showcased here in the past.

Karan says, “The Telluride Festival is a great honour and achievement, and we are extremely proud... Traditionally, front-running Oscar-worthy films have had their presence here, and we are hopeful for the potential our film has with the Academy Awards.” Ritesh adds, “I’m thrilled to be in Telluride, and in a line-up that includes my favourite filmmakers, the Coen Brothers, and Robert Redford (they are being awarded).”
