Kalank actors Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt speak about the film and remember Sridevi who was originally supposed to play Bahaar Begum.
The highly anticipated Kalank teaser was finally unveiled on Tuesday at a special event. The entire star cast of the film was in colour-coordinated ethnic ensembles as they came together to witness the launch. While Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt were twinning in white, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha chose red for the occasion. Meanwhile, Sanjay Dutt got a special welcome message from producer and host Karan Johar who called him the closest member of his family since his father’s days. Sanjay made a powerful style statement in a black sherwani-salwar as Madhuri Dixit matched up to him in a black and beige saree.

On Madhuri, Sanjay working together after 21 years
This is Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit’s first film in 21 years; they last collaborated on Mahanata. Talking about Madhuri, Sanjay said, “I am happy to have worked with her after such a long time. I will try to do more work with her.”

When Varun thought success had gone to Alia’s head
Talking about shooting for Kalank, Varun said Alia “showed a lot of attitude” on the sets in the beginning. “In the beginning, we fought a lot. Alia was showing a lot of attitude on the sets and I was wondering what had happened. I thought she had signed two-three big films, so maybe that’s the reason. But later she told me that she was just in her character.”
He also recalled a story when he saved Alia from falling. “One day, I reached 20 minutes late for the shoot. I apologised to everyone on the set but Alia was not talking to me. Then Alia had to climb on a carriage and I was pretty sure that she would fall. But like always, I had to only hold her from falling and as soon as this happened, Alia smiled.”
To emphasise their chemistry, Varun and Alia recreated a moment from Badrinath Ki Dulhani. Varun picked up Alia and the two also posed for photos.

Alia said she was overwhelmed to be part of the film and called it a surreal experience. She went on to praise director Abhishek Varman for working hard on the film and said, “I have a lot of love for my director and my friend. He has put in a lot of effort and hard work to make it happen. He is the nicest and most amazing human being in the world. He is so nice that I just wish that the film just kills it. He deserves all the success and love in the world.”
Madhuri Dixit remembers Sridevi
Madhuri Dixit stepped into Kalank after Sridevi’s untimely death. Talking about her decision, Madhuri said at Kalank teaser launch, “Her demise was sad news for us. When I was approached for the role, it was not easy for me. I have immense respect for her. She was a good artiste and a good human being too. To step into the role, when you look in to it as an actress, it’s a different scenario as you add your own inputs to the character, but we used to remember her on sets as she was a part of the film.”
Talking about the process of shooting, Madhuri added, “Once you start working, you have to move on and do your job. I did that but I missed her too.”
Directed by Abhishek of 2 States fame, Kalank is set to hit the theatres on April 17.
