Malayalam film actor Malavika Mohanan got her first Hindi film break with Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds.

Actor Malavika Mohanan is enjoying the phase she’s currently in, after her first international film Beyond The Clouds, directed by the Oscar-nominated Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi, earned her some great reviews. Though we didn’t hear anything about her in Bollywood after that, now there are reports that Malavika is in talks to co-star with none other than Rajinikanth.

The actor, who worked in mainly Malayalam cinema before being cast in Beyond the Clouds, says that things have become decidedly smoother after the film’s India release in April this year. “When you’re aspiring to be an actor, unless you prove yourself, people don’t take you seriously, and that’s [true] for anyone out there. But the moment someone like Majid Majidi puts his faith in you, or casts you, [it] opens up so many doors professionally.”

“After [Beyond the Clouds] released,” adds Malavika, “a lot of people saw it, not just the masses, but a lot of [film] industry people, too. That has helped me, because people approached me for projects. Personally, too, it has boosted my confidence, as one [usually] has self-doubts if one can do it or not.”

Malavika’s next film is rumoured to be with Rajinikanth in a Tamil film. Bollywood, too, is on her radar. “I’m definitely in talks for Hindi films. This is where I want to work in. I’ve grown up in Mumbai, and this is where I want to be. Also, I like a lot of genres, as sticking to just one will be boring,” she says.

The actor is also clear about the kind of films she doesn’t want to be a part of. “I’d love to do most things, except for the really sexist comedies that are made in India. Doing different films, that’s where the fun is. What’s the point if you do the same kind of roles again and again? That’s the beauty of Bollywood films, there are so many different films happening in the same industry at the same time,” signs off Malavika.
