Paltan actor Sonal Chauhan is happy to be returning to Bollywood after a gap of five years
Besides Paltan, Sonal Chauhan is also doing a Mahesh Manjrekar film, which is an underworld gangster drama where the actor is said to be playing a character similar to Chandramukhi from Devdas.
It has been a decade since actor Sonal Chauhan made her acting debut with Jannat (2008). However, owing to her being “very selective about the kind of movies” she picks, it’s not often that we see her in a Bollywood film.
The actor even turned down Jashnn (2009), which was being made by Mahesh Bhatt — the very filmmaker who launched her in Jannat.
Asked whether refusing the film (starring Anjana Sukhani and Shahana Goswami) affected her relationship with Bhatt, the actor says, “I got Jannat when I was quite young, and impressionable. Mahesh sir really guided me, and helped me develop as a person. Every moment spent with him is priceless. He is an institution in himself with a great outlook towards life. There has been no tension between us because of Jashnn and I [still] meet him every now and then.”
Her last outing in Hindi film industry was in 2013 — 3G, opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh. And, she has done relatively more films in Telugu and Tamil industries.
Now, after a gap of five years, Sonal is set to make a comeback in Bollywood with JP Dutta’s war film, Paltan. “It was a lot of fun. It’s like one big happy family. There was not one day on set that everyone didn’t eat dinner together,” says Sonal, who will be seen playing the role of a soldier’s wife in the film. The actor believes that our industry “needs to make more movies based on war to highlight the importance of these heroes.”
While Paltan is all set to release next month, Sonal has already started working on her role in director Mahesh Manjrekar’s untitled next, which is an underworld gangster drama where the actor is said to be playing a character similar to Chandramukhi from Devdas. “The movie is a mix of The Godfather and Devdas. It’s not exactly the role of Chandramukhi but there is a love triangle in the film, so there might be some similarities,” says the actor.
