Parineeti wins Chopra clash at box office

Rarely do we get to see cousins clash at box office, but that is precisely what happened last week when the Priyanka Chopra-starrer Zanjeer and Parineeti Chopra’s Shuddh Desi Romance (SDR) hit theatres on the same weekend.
While the former is a remake of an Amitabh Bachchan-starrer classic by the same name, the latter was projected as an out-of-the-box romantic film. And though SDR is a smaller film (in terms of budget), trade analysts agree that it has outdone Zanjeer at the box office.
"Zanjeer had a disastrous start. It opened in 2,400 screens. The first day was so bad that they hardly collected Rs 2.5 crore. The collections fell further on the second day. But it picked up a bit on Sunday and made about Rs 3.5 crore. However, on Monday, the figures crashed yet again. It’s a disaster,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra.
On the other hand, SDR was made on a shoestring budget. More money was spent on print and publicity than in making the film. “They also released the film in limited screens. Out of 1,100 screens, 994 were with multiplexes, so there were only a few single screens showing the film. But its collections are extremely good. On the first day it made around R6 crore, on the second day about Rs 7 crore and the figure went up to Rs 8 crore on Sunday. These are good numbers for a film with no major stars,” says Mehra.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh seconds Mehra’s views on the two releases. He says, “Zanjeer has not done well at all. SDR has worked well because of its target audience. Its moderate budget also went in its favour. I think SDR will be declared a universal hit, not just in India.”
Mehra reasons that the budget of Zanjeer is one of the primary reasons behind its failure, “They had put in a lot of money into the project. With print and publicity, this film cost them nearly R65 crore,” says Mehra.
