The battle for supremacy on the box office between the two releases of this week, Akshay Kumar’s Singh Is Bliing and Irrfan’s Talvar, intensified over the weekend. While Singh Is Bliing took off to a flying start on Friday, driven largely by the pre-release hype around it, the film’s collections showed signs of petering off over Saturday and Sunday. Talvar, on the other hand, started slow on the opening day, but caught up over the weekend with some positive reviews and word of mouth publicity. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted about the first weekend business of both the films.

Directed by Prabhudheva, Singh Is Bliing collected more than Rs 20 crore on its opening day, Friday (October 2). It was also the biggest ever opener for Akshay Kumar.

Critics, however, ruined the party for the film, and their verdict was more than telling on the ticket windows over the weekend.

On the other hand, Meghna Gulzar’s Talvar, which stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Neeraj Kabi and Irrfan in important roles, picked up steam after a slow start. The film collected only Rs 50 lakh in paid previews on October 1, and collected Rs 2.50 crore on day one.

As per the details provided by the production house behind Talvar, Junglee Pictures, the film is made at a budget of Rs 16 crore including the publicity.
