It’s an open secret that he is a complete teetotaler. But actor John Abraham seems to have finally broken his vow — though only for professional reasons. A few days ago, John was supposed to do a long and emotional sequence for Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala. And to get into the skin of his character (Manya Surve), John gulped down half a bottle of champagne.

“Usually I never drink, but it was an important scene and I wanted to get it absolutely right,” confirms John. “The idea was to feel the agony Manya is going through at that point. I very occasionally drink champagne, but I can’t stand the smell of alcohol. Still, I was completely in favour of drinking for the scene.”

As a result, since John was shooting near director Gupta’s house (at Yari Road), the duo immediately called for a bottle of champagne. “The next thing I know I had gulped down half a bottle of chilled champagne,” says John, adding he has gotten into the ‘method acting’ zone for the project. Ask Sanjay Gupta about it and he laughs, “The last thing I wanted to do was make a teetotaler like John drink. But it only shows how deeply he is involved in the film. He has completely surrendered himself to me as an actor. So whether it is getting off BEST buses going at the speed of 120 kms per hour or drinking for the first time, I am completely taken by his sincerity and hard work.”

The sequence in question is a two-page monologue that John acts out with his co-star Kangana Ranaut. “And can you believe we shot the entire scene without a cut? Since I was completely drunk, I didn’t even realise how long the scene was,” laughs John, adding that there are no lows and only highs for the ‘actor’ John Abraham in the gangster film.

The film also stars Sonu Sood, Tusshar Kapoor and Bipasha Basu.
