The fall of high heels: Don’t let stilettos define how feminine you look!
5 alternatives to high heels that’ll make you stand tallerbrunch Updated: Aug 11, 2018 22:52 IST
For centuries, the rules of femininity, however harsh or uncomfortable, have been dictated to women of all ages, races and sizes. Nip your waist. Have flawless skin. Wear high heels. But, 2018 is the tipping point for these rules. Welcome to the brave new world of shoes – where comfort does not get compromised for style.
Wear oxfords for gender-neutral strength
“Oxfords add a touch of masculinity to any look,” says celebrity fashion stylist, Devki Bhatt, who has dressed actors like Taapsee Pannu and Gauhar Khan.
Wear these with: “A pair of paperbag-waist trousers and a classic white shirt or anything in neutral colours,” says Devki.
They are perfect for: “All shapes and sizes. But women who have a heavy built should opt for neutral-toned shoes with a slight heel. If you’re petite, avoid chunky heels,” she reveals.
Please do avoid: “Colourful oxfords,” cautions Devki.
Slip into slides in the name of fashion...
“Slides are a summer must-have! Initially seen as chunky, slides have emerged as not only the most comfortable shoe of the season but also the trendiest one. Embellishments, satin bows and fur straps can make them look effortless,” says shoe designer and founder of Oceedee, Neha Kumthekar.
Wear these with: “A fun day dress or shorts. They work really well for those scorching summer days when we wish shoes are optional. Slides are perfect daytime options for women on the go,” says Devki.
They are perfect for:: “Someone looking for a pair of shoes for running errands,” says Devki.
Please do avoid: “Wearing it to a very formal event,” says fashion designer Yadvi Agarwal.
...or slide into slip-ons from day to night
“Effortless, versatile and sleek, slip on shoes are perfect for every outfit or season. Designed in luxe leathers, quirky patterns, embellishments or metallics, this silhouette lets you transition from day to night with ease,” says Neha.
Wear these with: “Casual clothes. However, you can rock these shoes at a party as well with a little embellishment,” says Yadvi Agarwal.
They are perfect for: “Mostly all body types,” says Devki Bhatt.
Please do avoid: “If you have an hourglass figure as slides tend to make you look shorter. However, one can avoid this by pairing them with cropped pants or outfits that hit the ankle or mid shin,” concludes Devki.
Party pain-free with block heels
“Block heel is a comfortable and an elegant alternative to stilettos. From outdoor events to walking from one meeting to another, this chic style has perfect elevation and stability. It’s versatile for every occasion,” explains Neha.
Wear these with: “Cropped trousers and skirts for a chic office look or style them for an evening in a lovely dress,” says Neha.
They are perfect for: “Women of all age-groups!” says Devki.
Please do avoid: “If you have a very skinny body-type as block heels may make you look thinner than you are,” feels designer Yadvi.
Kick up practicality with sneakers
“Sneakers were associated with hip hop culture during 1970s as brands like Adidas and Nike dressed various artists in their shoes for several music videos. So they’re often perceived as ‘cool’ other than being utilitarian for sports,” says Yadvi.
Wear these with:“Shorts and your favourite jersey. Sneakers can also be worn with relaxed day dresses in white or black for that little spunk,” says Yadvi.
They are perfect for: “All ages, shapes and sizes. Sneakers are meant for garments that are relaxed yet sporty,” she feels.
Please do avoid: “If you’re feeling doubtful about wearing sneakers. Sneakers need an attitude more than anything else,” concludes Yadvi.
