FM ups the ante for tax collectors

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has asked officials of Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) to mobilise resources to meet the target of indirect tax collections of Rs 5.05 lakh crore for 2012-13.

Addressing the 27th annual conference of chief commissioners and directors general of CBEC on Monday, he urged the officials to conduct intelligent scrutiny of assessees records to bring to the kitty any tax that might have escaped assessment, and to detect frauds. He asked officials to make efforts to unlock the revenue locked up in litigations in various courts.

“Strive to build a transparent and hassle-free tax regime, where the assessee voluntarily complies with the statutory requirements and dreads any breach of regulatory provisions,” he said.
