The annual list published on Sunday reveals that London has 72 residents whose fortune is more than £1 billion, more than Moscow (48) or New York (43). In total, the UK boasts 104 billionaires, worth £301 billion (`30 lakh crore).

The Hinduja brothers, Srichand and Gopichand, top the list, with a joint wealth of £11.9 billion (`1.2 lakh crore), up by £1.3 billion (`13,130 crore) compared to the previous year.

Third on the list is steel magnate and ArcelorMittal chairman Lakshmi Mittal and family, worth £10.25 billion, up £250 million over their worth last year.

The latest list means that the UK has more billionaires per head than any other country. There is one billionaire here for every 607,000 people; the US has one for every 1,022,475.

More than half (39) of London’s billionaires were born abroad. The Duke of Westminster is the richest Briton with £8.5 billion, leaving him 10th on the list.
