SC refuses stay on wheat import

A petition has been filed seeking quashing of the government's decision to import one million tonnes of wheat by July 2007.

Supreme Court on Thursday refused stay on wheat import on a petition filed by farm activist Vandana Shiva, seeking quashing of the government's decision to import one million tonnes of wheat by July 2007.

The three-judge Supreme Court bench was headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan.

In an affidavit, Shiva had sought a direction to the government to ban future trading in foodgrains.

She had also urged that multinational companies (MNCs) and private traders should be banned from purchasing directly from the farmers.
