South accounts for 58% of software exports in 2003-04

The southern region accounted for the maximum 58% of the total computer software exports, at Rs 33,475 crore in 2003-04.

The southern region accounted for the maximum 58 per cent of the total computer software exports, at Rs 33,475 crore in 2003-04, according to Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council.

The total software exports from the country in 2003-04 stood at Rs 58,000 crore.

However, the region's share has come down from the previous fiscal's 60 per cent, ESC said in a release on Monday, adding this indicates an increase in exports from the other regions.

Karnataka's share in the regional exports was recorded at 58 per cent during 2003-04 at Rs 19,400 crore, up from 54 per cent in 2002-03, the council's executive director DK Sareen said.

The state's share in the total export was 33 per cent in 2003-04 against 32 per cent in the previous year.

Tamil Nadu stood second at 24 per cent (Rs 8100 crore) followed by Andhra Pradesh 17 per cent (Rs 5650 crore).

The northern region occupied the second slot with its 22 per cent in the total exports totalling Rs 12,552 crore, up from the previous year's 21 per cent.

In the region, Haryana contributed maximum at Rs 5000 crore followed by Uttar Pradesh at Rs 3550 crore and Delhi at Rs 3550 crore.

The western region exported software services worth Rs 10,048 crore with a share of 17 per cent of the total exports with Maharashtra leading at Rs 9882 crore.

Eastern region's share was only three per cent at Rs 1925 crore led by West Bengal at Rs 1600 crore and Orissa Rs 325 crore.
