Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover begin operations at Panapakkam plant, rolls out Range Rover Evoque
The plant will produce next-generation vehicles, including EVs, for both brands, with the locally manufactured Range Rover Evoque becoming the first model.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd and its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover have begun operations at their new manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, located in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet district. The plant marks the first phase of a greenfield project that will build next-generation vehicles, including electric models, for both Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Jaguar Land Rover brands.

The first model to roll out of the Panapakkam facility is the locally assembled Range Rover Evoque. The facility was inaugurated by M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, along with N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. The event was attended by ministers, senior government officials and leadership teams from Tata Motors, JLR and the Tata Group.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister highlighted Tamil Nadu’s long-standing association with the Tata Group and said the new plant further strengthens the state’s position as a key automotive and manufacturing hub. He added that the project would support job creation, innovation and industrial growth in the region.
N. Chandrasekaran said the Panapakkam facility represents an important step in the Tata Group’s plans to strengthen India’s role in sustainable and future-ready manufacturing. He also underlined the group’s continued partnership with Tamil Nadu.
Focus on skilled workforce and capacity expansion
The Panapakkam plant combines advanced manufacturing processes with a skilled shopfloor workforce drawn from across Tamil Nadu. Many of the technicians are part of Tata Motors’ Lakshya programme, an earn-while-you-learn initiative that enables shopfloor employees to progress into engineering and management roles. Selected polytechnic graduates underwent five months of hands-on training at JLR facilities and also have the opportunity to pursue a company-sponsored B.Tech degree while working.
Vehicle production at the plant will be ramped up in phases. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to reach an annual capacity of up to 2.5 lakh vehicles over the next five to seven years, catering to both domestic and international markets.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles plans to invest around ₹9,000 crore in the Panapakkam facility over time. The project has the potential to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Sustainability at the core
Sustainability is a key focus of the Panapakkam plant. The facility has been designed to run entirely on renewable energy and aims to be water positive. With an emphasis on efficiency and reduced emissions, the plant follows stringent global environmental standards.
