Thinking of buying a Harrier or Safari Petrol? Here's Their Bharat NCAP Safety Rating

Bharat NCAP has extended the safety ratings of the diesel versions of the Safari and Harrier to the upcoming petrol versions, which are slated to launch soon.

Bharat NCAP has announced that it is extending the safety rating of the Harrier and Safari to the new petrol variants. The Safari Petrol will be sold in Smart, Pure X, Adventure X+, Adventure X and Accomplished Ultra variants, whereas the Harrier will come in Smart, Adventure X, Adventure X+, Fearless X, Fearless X+ and Fearless Ultra variants.

The Safari and Harrier were the first SUVs to be crash tested by Bharat NCAP.

Back in 2023, the Harrier and Safari were tested by Bharat NCAP. In fact, they were the first cars to be tested by the agency. The SUVs scored 30.08/ 32 in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 44.54 / 49.00 in Child Occupant Protection (COP). Now, the same rating will be applicable to the petrol versions of the Harrier and Safari as well.

The SUVs are equipped with seven airbags, of which six are provided as standard in all variants. Additionally, they feature Electronic Stability Control, three-point seatbelts in every row, seatbelt reminders for all passengers, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and seatbelts that include a retractor, pretensioner, load limiter, and anchor pretensioner.

What powers the Tata Harrier and Safari Petrol?

At the heart of the Harrier petrol is a brand new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine from Tata’s "Hyperion" series. This engine recently made its first appearance in the Sierra. This powertrain incorporates high-pressure gasoline direct injection, an aluminium engine block that minimises weight while improving stiffness, and a water-cooled variable-geometry turbocharger.

Furthermore, the engine is designed with dual cam phasing, a variable oil pump, an integrated exhaust manifold within the cylinder head, and a maintenance-free timing chain and valve train that are engineered for durability and lower ownership costs.

In terms of performance, this 1.5-litre engine is rated at approximately 168–170 bhp (around 170 hp) at about 5,000 rpm, delivering peak torque of around 280 Nm within the 2,000-3,500 rpm range.

Both manual and automatic transmission options will be on offer. The automatic transmission will be a torque converter unit, while the manual gearbox will feature a 6-speed configuration.

Tata Harrier and Safari Petrol launch and price

The launch of the petrol versions of the Harrier and Safari will happen soon. The SUVs have already started arriving at dealership yards. The petrol engine is expected to contribute to a decrease in the starting price of the Harrier. The expected starting price for the Tata Harrier petrol variant in India is around ₹13–14 lakh (ex-showroom), which is slightly lower than the current diesel price range of approximately ₹14 lakh to ₹25.25 lakh. The Safari currently starts at ₹14.66 lakh and with the petrol engine, the pricing should start around ₹14 lakh ex-showroom.

Through this pricing approach and the launch of a new engine, Tata Motors intends to improve the Harrier and Safari’s position in the mid-size SUV segment, offering consumers a more refined petrol alternative.
