The 21-year-old Shankar alias Judi was released from Burail jail just few days before the incident. He was lodged in the jail in connection with a robbery case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him.

The blood of the deceased Pappu, 30, found on jacket of the convict Shankar helped prove his guilt. On December 15 last year, the UT police had booked Shankar for allegedly stabbing Pappu, a vegetable vendor, a resident of the said colony.

As per the complaint lodged on December 15 last year, when Pappu's sister-in-law stepped out of her house around 4 am to go for a walk, Shankar allegedly grabbed her and molested her. The victim raised an alarm following which Pappu came out for her rescue. The accused, in a bid to save himself, pulled out a knife and stabbed Pappu before fleeing the spot. Pappu was then taken to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) where he succumbed to his injuries.
