Eight killed as van rams into stationary truck in Sonepat
Eight persons including five women and a 15 year old youth died on the spot, when a fast moving Maruti van in which they were travelling collided with a parked container, near Rai town on national highway 1 on Sunday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Rameshwar, his wife Gulabo, Kamla, Zilo Devi, Indiro Devi, Piari Devi and Aman - all resident of village Sandal Kalan of this district.
The driver of the van Mukesh alias Nanha of village Shahzadpur also died on the spot.
The victims were on their way back home from a religious place near Mathura of Uttar Pardesh.
As per the initial information, the van driver lost control of vehicle, after he dozed off near Rai town of this district, and hit in the rear end of deflated parked truck, which caused the death of all eight.
Following the incident, police was informed and they rushed on the spot to take stock of situation, and admitted the victims to civil hospital where they were declared brought dead.
Police had to use crane to separate the mingled parts of ill fated car with truck. Residents of Sandan Kalan and Sahjadpur village also reached the civil hospital after getting the unfortunate news.
District administration officials including deputy commissioner Pankaj Aggarwal, SP Arun Singh reached the civil hospital for consoling the family of deceased, while leaders of various political parties including Vidhan Sabha speaker Kuldeep Sharma attended the funeral ceremony of the deceased at their native village Sandan Kalan in afternoon.
