Anything to do with fitness, you can expect Neeraj Mehta to be in the know-how of it. The Delhi-based fitness instructor, who claims to have introduced BMX Strength exercises in India in 1999, was in the city on Monday to launch his fitness academy at Zirakpur called Club Fitness.
A facilitator for yoga, strength training and clinical exercises, Neeraj is a qualified pilates and aerobics trainer and black belt in taekwondo.
Sharing details about BMX Strength, an effective physical training method, the 41-year-old former model says, “It is a new exercise technique that follows biomechanics. Body movements while practicing this are more joint-friendly and the focus is on the primary muscles.
Through this exercise, we make people understand the right body posture to be adopted. BMX helps in gaining strength, cardiovascular fitness and flexibility.” Neeraj is currently the director of GFFI (Growth For Fitness Instructor) Fitness Academy in Delhi. Through the academy, they aim to educate, motivate and help individuals reach their fitness goals, he says.
For Neeraj, fitness equates flexibility. “Someone who is not flexible is not fit. Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the most loved body builders, had biceps measuring 23-24 inches. But that didn’t make him flexible. In comparison, Bruce Lee, an icon of martial arts in cinema, was both flexible and fit.”
Neeraj, who is pursuing PhD in human biomechanics, says fitness requires aerobic and muscular endurance.
“So, if someone can lift heavy weights at the gym, should also be able to lift his child or run to catch a bus. Neeraj says he also introduced ‘iron yoga’ in the country for the first time, which uses weights with yoga asanas and helps increase flexibility and improve lean muscle mass which fires up metabolism and assists in weight loss. “I have so far trained almost 8,000 physical fitness experts,” he says.
The master instructor in speed and strength training, flexibility and drills, Neeraj provides training sportspersons as well as corporate clients. He is also a chiropractor who has been practicing acupressure therapy for more than five years. “My father is behind my success story. I was nine when he introduced me to the world of fitness and just 12 when I became a national level taekwondo champion. At 14, I was a black belt,” he smiles.
After having walked the ramp for ace designers such as JJ Valaya, Suneet Verma and Ashish Soni in the late 1990s, Neeraj now trains models including Vidyut Jamwal and Sachin Khurana.
How to control an increasing paunch
