In a letter to its members, joint action committee of the group housing societies, Sector 20, has urged the members not to pay the property tax till the Haryana government rationalise it. The committee has demanded that the property tax for both the independent as well as flat owners should be equal.
"A person who owns an independent plot house of 150 sq yards pays property tax of Rs 112.50 while a flat owner with area of 150 sq yards pays Rs 1,012.50 which is 900% more than the independent house members. Even if the state government gives rebate of 30% (`303) you still pay Rs 708,"said the letter.
The joint action committee has over 120 housing societies' groups as its members. "The Haryana government has imposed irrational, illegal and unreasonable property tax on the flat owners. Panchkula MC cannot levy any property tax till Sector 20 is handed over by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) to the MC,"said Colonel (retired) SK Aggarwal, who is also a general secretary of the committee.
"A person with an independent plot is exempted for basement and pays 40% less for the first floor and 50% less for the second floor,"he added. The committee has already submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and urban local bodies department principle secretary P Raghvendra Rao in this regard.
"Some of the societies are planning to go to the court and challenge this irrational tax structure. This option can be used as the last resort,"said Aggarwal.
