More than 2,000 families are likely to be displaced. However, sources said that most had left the area by Friday evening.

The estate office will carry out the drive that will start at around 6am, with a posse of around 1,000 cops standing guard.

RESIDENTS STAGE PROTEST

More than 100 residents of the colonies blocked the Sector 52 road in protest against the demolition on Friday. Additional police force had to be called in. Residents of the four colonies, who were found eligible, were rehabilitated in May last year. The administration had made arrangements in flats constructed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

HC REFUSES TO HEAR STAY PETITION

Twenty five residents of Majdoor Colony, Pandit Colony, Nehru Colony and Kajheri Colony, moved Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday, seeking stay on the demolition drive to be carried out by the Chandig arh estate of fice on Saturday. However, the court refused to entertain the petition under ‘urgency clause’, without following due procedure.

The division bench heade d by justice Jasbir Singh, turning down the request, said that the case must come through the registry as per the court’s procedure.
