Bajwa had fallen behind Khanna in Dera Baba Nanak assembly constituency, represented by Randhawa, by more than 25,000 votes.

In the resignation, sent to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Randhawa has said that he failed to execute his duty and felt responsible for the defeat.

"I realise that the Congress failed to address the people's mood, which was against the SAD-BJP government. We failed to raise the issues of the land mafia, the rising prices of sand, and police excesses on the common man," he added.

The letter also highlighted groupism and indiscipline in the Punjab Congress, besides the party's failure to act as an effective opposition in the state.
