District and sessions judge, SK Aggarwal, on Thursday awarded life term to husband guilty of murdering wife on suspicion of infidelity.
25 year old, Vikram, would spend rest of his life in jail. He was convicted on the statements of the mother and brother of the deceased.
"By claiming life of his wife he had committed a crime that does not deserve leniency but the murder does not fall in the category of rarest of rare category," said the court while pronouncing quantum of sentence and also imposing a fine of Rs 5000 on the convict.
"Finally justice has been done, he used to beat my daughter mercilessly and had killed her owing to his suspicion," said Dhyanwati, mother of the deceased while expressing satisfaction after the pronouncement of sentence.
Police on December 15, 2012, had booked Vikram for killing his 19-year-old wife, Pinki, by strangulating her at her maternal house in Mauli Jagran, Mani Majra. Vikram in order to pass off the murder as suicide had put the body on a bed and locked the room from outside before escaping.
The murder had come came to light when Dhyanwati, had returned home from her job, opened the room and found Pinki's body with a dupatta around her neck lying on the bed.
Dhyanwati, had told the police that her daughter had married Vikram in June 2012 and the two had come to Chandigarh from Jind, to see her son Sanjeev who was unwell. Dhyanwati, said that Vikram and Pinki had strained relation as he suspected her of infidelity. She claimed that her daughter was kidnapped by one youth Arjun, few days prior to her marriage. She claimed that Vikram came to know about the said incidence, which led to strained relationship among them and Vikram used beat Pinki regularly accusing her of having an extramarital with Arjun.
Dhyanwati, said that a few hours before the mother Pinki had called her and told her that Vikram was assaulting her and that she (Dhyanwati) should come home early. She claimed even on the same morning he had physically abused Pinki when she had failed to cook meal on time.
