IED found in Srinagar, tragedy averted

A major tragedy was averted on Thursday evening with the timely detection of an improvised explosive device (IED) by police on a crowded highway in Srinagar.

A major tragedy was averted today evening with the timely detection of an improvised explosive device (IED) by police on a crowded highway in Srinagar.

The IED, planted in a white Maruti 800 bearing a Jammu number, was detected on a bridge in the Chanapora area on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway. "Police detected the IED kept in an unattended vehicle on Chanapora bridge. The bomb disposal squad is on the job," said a police spokesman.
According to reports, around 25 kg of explosive was seized from the car.

"The squad has taken out a cylinder, a pressure cooker and a can filled with explosives," the spokesman added.

According to sources, the vehicle was towed away to an open area and traffic on the road suspended as a precautionary measure. "The squad is on the job," said the spokesman.
