Panjab University (PU) is all set to give 15% extra weightage to honours graduates wanting to pursue Master of Laws. It will be provided for honours in any bachelor degree. Even in case the aspirant had honours in LLB as well as the bachelor degree before that, the weightage will still remain 15%. The move will get a final nod during the PU syndicate meeting scheduled for July 12, HT has learnt.

Recommendation to this effect has been made by the faculty of laws quoting the Bar Council of India (BCI) Rules of Legal Education 2008. The faculty has said that weightage for honours be given for admission to LLM just the way it is given for other post-graduate courses at PU. The weightage will be 15% of the marks obtained by the candidate in the qualifying exam for admission to the masters.

Besides, to make up for shortage of teachers, the syndicate will also take up the issue of enhancement of retirement age of re-employed faculty from 65 to 70 years. Guest faculty would also be only those who retired as faculty from PU or any other university. Demand for rotation of headship at PU departments is also on the agenda.

The syndicate will also give formal nod to a compulsory subject, ‘Domestic Violence against Women and Children’, in all under-graduate courses.

Another item for ratification is the re-appropriation of Rs 20 crore as loan out of PU plan/scheme/ project account in anticipation of release of grant by the UGC and Punjab government. Vicechancellor Arun Kumar Grover had already okayed it in anticipation of syndicate approval, and the loan will be used for salary expenditure and other dayto-day needs. It shall be replenished once the grant is received.
