Lust landed a would-be groom in double trouble on Saturday, when police registered a dowry case against him for demanding Rs 50 lakh from the bride's family. In a separate case, Ambala Police also booked him for raping his niece, who had come to attend his wedding.
According to police officials, 22-year-old Divya, a resident of Raipu Rani in Panchkula, was to be married to Satish Kumar of Landran. Her father owns a cloth shop.
Divya's marriage was fixed with the mediation of Ambala-based cloth merchant Ravi Grover, the brother-in-law of Satish, as the former has business relations with the girl's father.
The police revealed that the ring ceremony had been held on December 5, 2012, and the wedding was scheduled for February 6.
The girl's family had completed all the arrangements for the marriage and had also booked Siraj Hotel in Panchkula for Rs 1.5 lakh as the wedding venue. However, the family was left in a state of shock, when on the day of wedding they received a call from Grover saying that Satish had refused to marry Divya. Grover immediately called the family to Ambala.
In the complaint filed with police, the girl's family alleged that Satish's family demanded Rs 50 lakh in Ambala.
"They said their relatives are very upset over the ring ceremony function as not much money was spent on it. They also said that they have several 'parties' who are ready to give Rs 50 lakh as dowry; they said the wedding was possible only when we gave them the money," said Divya's father.
Divya's family members were also roughed up when they tried to reason out the matter. The family filed a complaint with the Sector-5 police post and the police registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The police on Saturday also revealed that Satish had allegedly raped one of his nieces, who had come to attend his wedding from Sangrur in Punjab. He had allegedly asked her to accompany him to Chandigarh for shopping, where he had taken her to a hotel and raped her. The Ambala police registered a case under Section 376 of the IPC against Satish.
