The quantum of sentence came during the same hearing in which Chander Pal was convicted of murdering his cousin Karamvir, a resident of Balongi. Pal's alleged accomplice, Naresh Kumar, was acquitted, while two other accused, Ateek and Krishna, are still absconding.

SAS Nagar police had registered a case of murder on September 17, 2012 - nearly three months after Karamvir had died mysteriously -after Karamvir's viscera report had indicated death due to poisoning.

The case was registered on a complaint by Karamvir's brother Vikas, who alleged that he along with Karamvir had a shop in Phase 4. On May 2, 2012, Vikas and Karamvir were sitting in their shop when Pal and Ateek came there and offered them kheer.

But, soon after consuming the kheer, Karamvir started vomiting. His condition deteriorated and he was taken to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he died on May 3, 2012.

Vikas claimed that Karamvir had a property dispute with Naresh Kumar.
