The SAS Nagar municipal corporation (MC) is all set to crack a whip on the property tax defaulters in the city. There are about 50% defaulters who owe about `10 crore penalty amount, including the interest.
On direction of the Punjab government, the MC had even lowered the penalty interest amount to 20% along with 18% interest on the amount from April 1, 2014 from 100% penalty. But, not many defaulters have come forward to pay the tax.
Now the MC has also prepared a list of defaulters, including those from business and industry category, and has started issuing notices to them. It has been learnt that from January, the MC will start a drive against such defaulters to collect the due property tax, including the penalty and the interest.
"We have prepared the list of defaulters. Once we are through with the big business establishments, which owe the maximum amount, we will start the drive in residential units,"said MC commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta.
Through advertisements, the MC has been urging residents to pay the tax, considering that the ultimate loss is theirs only, for they will have to pay the entire amount along with interest, he added.
The penalty on the pending tax which has been reduced to 20% along with 18 % interest on the amount from April 1, 2014, will have to be paid till the time the tax amount is ultimately paid off.
The property tax was implemented by Punjab in 2013 and the last date to pay it was September 30.
Meanwhile, it has been four months since the MC has been awaiting notification regarding the new property tax, which was cleared by the Punjab government. The MC officials informed in absence of the notification, the new property rates were not applicable as of now.
